Multiple construction projects will commence following Reunion Weekend, impacting how you navigate campus by vehicle and on foot.
First, Holy Cross Drive will be closed to through traffic beginning Monday, June 3, through the first week of July. The road is being rerouted to accommodate the construction of two new undergraduate halls on the south side of campus. That project will entail the decommissioning of Pangborn and Fisher Halls to make room for the new residence halls.
At the same time, construction crews will begin the first of a two-phase renovation project at the Main Circle, closing the roundabout to traffic. Traffic on North Notre Dame Avenue will be restricted until mid-August, with vehicle access limited to the Morris Inn and McKenna Hall, and deliveries to Stinson-Remick Hall. Phase II will commence next spring and be completed in late summer 2025.
To the south, a city-led project to make Angela Boulevard safer for pedestrians is underway. Angela will be narrowed from four lanes to two between Notre Dame Avenue and Twyckenham Drive, with a new traffic light at Joyce Drive and curb bump-outs to make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road. This project is expected to be completed in late July.
Additionally, Courtney Lane, between Twyckenham Drive and Leahy Drive, was closed to vehicle traffic May 6 to accommodate the construction of the new Jack and Kathy Shields Family Hall. Pedestrians may still access the area. Courtney Lane is expected to reopen in 2026.
On the north edge of campus, construction has started on a new Kindercare facility located near White Field, adjacent to Beichner Hall and The Landings at Notre Dame apartments. This additional on-site facility will provide child care for faculty, staff and students with children between the ages of 6 weeks and 3 years. That project is expected to be completed next year.
As part of the construction of a new geothermal plant north of the Joyce Center, crews this summer will temporarily uncover utility tunnels to load hot water pipes at select locations in the north end of DeBartolo Quad and on the west and east sides of the Snite.
“The wide range of infrastructure projects this summer serves as an example of the vibrancy and growth of our campus,” said Doug Marsh, vice president for facilities design and operations and University architect. “As these many projects get underway, we are deeply thankful for everyone’s patience while navigating the inconveniences caused by these temporary disruptions.”
