What is ND Safe?
ND Safe is a new smartphone app for faculty, staff and students to access multiple resources for personal safety all in one place, including one-button calls to Notre Dame Police/Fire/Emergency Dispatch, St. Joseph County 911 and non-emergency assistance. ND Safe is available for free and easy to download for any Notre Dame student, faculty or staff member using their ND credentials.

Who can download ND Safe?
Any one, including faculty, staff, students and guests can download ND Safe.
What device(s) can I use ND Safe on?
ND Safe is intended to be used on current iOS and Android devices.
Does my friend or parent I asked to "walk me home" have to download ND Safe?
No, your friend will receive a text message or an email (you choose) with a unique link and will be directed to a web-based map where they can monitor your location. No app required!
What is the difference between Friend Walk and Virtual Walkhome?
The Friend Walk and Virtual Walkhome are very similar. The primary difference is who you choose to "walk" with you. Friend Walk allows you to invite a friend or family member to "walk" with you. Virtual Walkhome sends your request to NDPD and your walk is visible to Notre Dame Police Dispatchers.
Can I use ND Safe off campus?
Many features of ND Safe can be used off campus (Friend Walk, Social Escape, Report a Tip, Safety Toolbox, and other) while some require you to be within the campus geofence (Mobile BlueLight and Virtual Walkhome).
I am studying aboard. Can I use ND Safe internationally?
Many features of ND Safe can be used off campus (Friend Walk, Social Escape, Report a Tip, Safety Toolbox, and others) while some require you to be within the campus geofence (Mobile BlueLight and Virtual Walkhome). Message and data rates apply.
What if I enact the Mobile BlueLight on campus but then go off campus?
If Mobile BlueLight is enacted while within campus limits, a notification is sent to NDPD and a breadcrumb trail begins. You location will be tracked even if you exit the campus geofence.
Are the apartment complexes surrounding campus included in the campus geofence?
No, the geofence is restricted to the property lines of the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana campus.
Is Chat With NDPD/NDFD Dispatch monitored 24/7?
While NDPD/NDFD dispatch is staffed 24/7, the chat messages may not be actively monitored. In the event of an emergency, use Emergency Contacts to call NDPD/NDFD Dispatch if on campus (or dial 574-631-5555 from your phone) or Call 911 if off campus.
Will I have to log-in every time I open the app?
No, you should only need to log in to ND Safe the first time.
Do I need to have ND Mobile in order to use ND Safe?
No, you do not need ND Mobile to use ND Safe (though we highly recommend you download ND Mobile, too).
I enabled my location settings. Will NDPD be tracking me all the time or without my permission?
No, NDPD and your friends/family can only see your location via ND Safe when you have given exclusive permission by inviting to a Friend Walk, beginning a Virtual Walkhome, or enacting the Mobile BlueLight.
I enabled push notifications. What notifications will I receive?
Enabling push notifications allows for an additional way to receive ND Alerts. Disabling notifications for NDSafe or muting sounds (Do Not Disturb) on your device could prevent or disrupt the effective delivery of NDAlerts through ND Safe.
Can I disable notification in ND Safe?
You can disable notification under the About/Preferences button inside the ND Safe or through your device's notifications settings; however, doing so will prevent ALL alerts from ND Safe (and ND Alert for NetID users) from being received.
Can Guests receive ND Alerts through ND Safe?
No, but guest users may subscribe to either of the SMS Opt-in options advertised in ND Safe and at emergency.nd.edu.
ND Safe is frozen or not working. What do I do?
Force quit ND Safe and try again. If problems continue, visit the Service Now Knowledge Base or contact the OIT Help Desk for additional troubleshooting assistance.
