Regulations & Etiquette
Sharing campus infrastructure successfully requires a community mindset. Because our 14 charging stations serve a growing ecosystem of EV drivers across the Notre Dame community, following shared rules of courtesy and official parking guidelines ensures everyone has access to a reliable charge. Below, you will find the required etiquette protocols, including maximum plug-in durations, active-charging mandates, and clear instructions on what to do once your battery is full, designed to keep our community moving forward sustainably.
Regulations
- Parking in electrical charging stalls is restricted to vehicles plugged in for charging.
- Electric vehicle charging stations are available on a first come, first served basis.
- Electric vehicles are not permitted to charge via power sources not specifically designated for EV charging. The use of interior and exterior building outlets is strictly prohibited and enforced.
- If the charging space is occupied, DO NOT unplug another vehicle so that you can plug your vehicle in.
- In order to use the University's EV charging stations, you must display a Notre Dame hang tag.
- Charging of electric vehicles is limited to a 4-hour period per 24-hour window. The time limit on all EV parking stalls will be monitored and enforced by Notre Dame Parking Services.
Etiquette for shared/limited EV charging equipment
- Please be aware these stations are a courtesy that the University offers to commuters, and are not intended to serve as the primary charging source for EV drivers.
- Don't charge your vehicle if you don't need to. Please leave the spot available for another EV driver that may need the charge.
- Please prevent injury by winding the charging cord neatly to keep it off the grass and prevent the cord from being tripped on or run over by a lawn mower. The University does not have extra cords to immediately replace damaged ones.
