Electric Vehicle Parking Program
In addition to EV charging stations, the University provides a limited number of parking spaces for electric vehicles (EVs) in preferred areas. These spaces are available at no cost, but require an active Notre Dame parking permit and an EV decal. To obtain an EV decal, the vehicle must utilize "electric" as the primary fuel source, per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN Decoder website. EV-preferred parking spaces are reserved for qualifying vehicles at all times and are indicated by signage.
Updated effective 2024, this program has been adapted from Notre Dame’s previous preferred parking program, which had been in place since 2009. Originally created to support the campus’s green building certification program (LEED), the preferred parking program is designed to encourage the adoption of technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with commuting. The EV-preferred parking program is positioned as just one of many solutions that the everyday commuter could adopt to reduce climate impacts and improve air quality in our local region.
Register your EV
Qualifying vehicles must have a parking decal displayed on the lower driver side of the windshield. If your vehicle qualifies for a preferred parking pass, you may register your vehicle with Parking Services by following the steps below. For more detailed instructions including photos, use this step-by-step guide (.pdf, 969k).
- Go to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN Decoder website and enter your vehicle's VIN and model year.
- Check that the primary fuel type is listed as "electric."
- Export the vehicle's information to a PDF (click the “export to PDF” button to the right of your vehicle’s description).

Fill out this EV Verification form, and attach the PDF with your vehicle’s information.
Note: Please ensure your EV is registered under your ParkND account - Parking Services is unable to issue your decal if it is not.
Parking Services will contact you when your vehicle is approved and your decal is ready for pick-up.
