Hazardous Materials

What should I do?

Get away from the area where the chemical is coming from and call 574-631-5555 from a cell phone or 911 from a campus phone. Inform them of the building and room number where the chemical was released.

If you are unable to evacuate without having to go through the chemical, try to get as far away and shelter-in-place. Call 574-631-5555 from a cell phone or 911 from a campus phone to inform them of your location (building name and room number). If possible, provide the dispatcher with the location of the chemical release as well as the type of chemical.

What will first responders do?

When first responders arrive, the first thing they will do is talk to the person that made the call of the chemical release. The first responders will need to know what chemical was released so they can use the proper equipment and personal protective equipment to rescue anyone sheltered in place. Knowing the type of chemical also ensure first reponders can begin additional precautionary measures for buildings and areas nearby, such as evacuation or shelter in place, if appropriate.
