Medical Emergency

What should I do?

If it is safe to do so, stay where you are and do not move a seriously injured or ill person. Call 574-631-5555 from a cell phone or 911 from a campus phone. Give as much information as possible. The dispatcher will ask you several questions. Please be patient and supply as much information as possible. Questions may include:

  • Is it an illness or injury?

  • What is the patient's location (building name and room number)?

  • Is the patient conscious and/or breathing?

  • What are the patients’ injuries?

  • Were any chemical or radioactive materials involved?

While on the phone, send someone to the building entrance to meet emergency personnel.

Only trained personnel should provide first aid or CPR. If first aid or CPR training is desired, please see resources below.

What will first responders do?

First responders will want to talk to whomever called 911 to gain as much information as possible about the patient and their illness / injury. They will use the information to better treat the patient. Depending on the situation, the first responders may treat the patient on scene or they may need to transport them to a local hospital.
