Robbery

What is robbery?

Robbery is the unlawful taking of property from a person by force, threat of force or fear.

How can I prevent robbery?

Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Factors that decrease your ability to be alert and aware are drugs and alcohol, fatigue, and distraction (cell phone, ear buds, etc.). Make sure you always know your current location, so if you had to call for help, you could tell the police exactly where you are. Take a mental notes of street signs and businesses.

Plan ahead. Make arrangements to get to and from your destination safely (designated driver, bus, ride share). Use Virtual Safe Walk or Friend Walk feature in the ND Safe mobile app.

Trust your instincts. If you see someone you think may be up to no good, take action. Make eye contact with them so they know you saw them. Move to the other side of the street or turn around. Get to a safe, well-lit location. If you think they might be following you or waiting for you, call 911.

Report suspicious activity. Even if the person does not approach you, if you believe they are suspicious, report it to the police and be prepared to describe what drew your attention to their behavior. You may prevent someone else from being robbed.

Don’t hesitate or be afraid to call the police. If you have to ask yourself if you should call the police, you should call the police. If you think you might be at risk, even if you have been drinking, the police can get to you the fastest and help you.  Your safety is their first priority.

What should I do if it happens to me?

Stay calm.

Follow their instructions and give them what they want. No money or property is worth risking your health or safety.

Do what you must to survive. Do not go with the person or get into a vehicle.

Call the police IMMEDIATELY. Try to give the police a good description of the person and vehicle (if applicable) and their direction of travel. Include details about their clothing, gender, race, hair length/color/style, scars, marks, tattoos, facial hair, etc. and vehicle information including color, make and model or style, license plate information (even if it is partial), etc.
