Theft

Theft is the most common and most prevalent crime that occurs on-campus.

What is theft?

Theft is the unlawful taking of property with the intent to deprive the rightful owner of the property. Theft does not have elements of force or threat of force.

How can I prevent theft?

  • Close and lock the door to your dorm room or office when you are sleeping or just stepping away.
  • Don’t leave valuables like your laptop, cell phone, wallet or jewelry unatteneded or in open view.
  • Do not leave your backpack or purse in your vehicle, even if your vehicle is locked.
  • Lock your bicycle to a bike rack using a U-Lock.
  • Keep track of your keys. Don’t give anyone the chance to duplicate them.
  • Report any and all suspicious activity and crime to Notre Dame Police immediately.

What should I do if it happens to me?

Notify NDPD as soon as you notice your property is missing. Be prepared to provide police with:

  • a description of your property including serial numbers and photos of available;
  • the approximate date and time you believe your property was taken;
  • the location from where it was taken; and
  • if you have the ability to track the location of your property (Apple Tag, Tile, find my phone, etc.), provide police with its last known location. Do not go to that location to try to recover your property on your own.
